First Post-Irma Cruise Ship Arrives in Sint Maarten, the Friendly Island Welcomes Tourists Back

Today, the first cruise ship — the Viking Sea — is docking in Philipsburg since Hurricane Irma hit Saint Martin. To say it’s a huge day is an understatement of epic proportions. This island and it’s people have been through so much. First they had to survive Irma, and then they had to withstand a political storm. They are a resilient people and my heart is with them on this day.

Along the way, there has been so much work done by the locals on the island. From groups coming together to clean up the beaches, to people picking up a hammer to help any way they can, there’s been such an intense sense of love and pride as the entire nation has come together.

Over the past week, SXM Angie has been out and about (of course!) and she took a few photos of Philipsburg, looking very nice and ready to welcome tourists back to the island.

Of course, this is just the beginning of the cruise ships returning. Two more ships will port this week, and a total of twelve will port in December. Click here to see the entire cruise schedule.

I fell in love with the island of Saint Martin the first time I visited, more than 10 years ago! Since then, I've spent a lot of time here getting to know this wonderful place and the friendly locals that make it so special. I adore the culture, the people, the community, and the beauty of this stunning island. SXM Strong is a website where I share my thoughts and love about Saint-Martin (French side) and Sint Maarten (Dutch side) with the world. I hope you enjoy it!
