SXM Local News: Sunset Beach Bar Reopening, Flight Schedule Update, Air Canada Cancels Flights

Over the last several years, Sunset Beach Bar has gone from a quaint little place to a large spread well beyond the original small seaside patio and octagonal shaped bar. Now, there’s a huge balcony that wraps well beyond the original structure, with a small pool, lots of tables on the patio, a club and a very nice souvenir shop that pales in comparison to the original little shack.

I miss those simpler days.

The expansion is called The Refuge and that octagonal bar and the original decking is still there, or at least it was before Irma. Here’s a video of what things looked like just after Irma hit.

From the video, and the photo below, it looks like most of the main structure was still intact, although it did sustain quite a bit of damage.

Sunset beach bar

Now we have news that Sunset Beach Bar is set to reopen this Sunday, November 5, 2017. The iconic bar on Maho Beach — currently ranked by Trip Advisor as the 5th ranked thing to do on the island — will be having BBQ and beer specials all day long, followed by some music starting at 5 PM.

Flight schedule updates

We’ve posted the updated flight schedule as of November 1, 2017, on our Flight and Travel Information page. Be sure to check there regularly as we’re updating the schedules twice a week until further notice.

The biggest change to the schedule is that Air Canada has cancelled the direct, nonstop flights from Toronto to SXM. There has been no indication from Air Canada when they plan to restart service from Toronto to Sint Maarten but surely, if and when it happens, it will likely not happen until at least 2018.

I fell in love with the island of Saint Martin the first time I visited to celebrate my 40th birthday in May of 2009. Since then, I've spent most birthdays there, and have visited countless other times getting to know this wonderful place and the friendly locals that make it so special. I adore the culture, the people, the community, and the beauty of this stunning island. SXM Strong is a website that I started to support humanitarian relief efforts following Hurricane Irma. There was no plan, it just evolved as I witnessed the devastation that Irma caused the island and the huge need to communicate and disseminate information about what had happened and how people could help support this island and its people.
